‘Organic cotton does not use synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, contributing to healthier soil. However, there are studies confirming the yield of organic cotton crop to be significantly lower than conventional farming methods (up to 25%). Therefore organic farmers need to cultivate more land and use more water for the same output. We’re not entirely convinced that organic cotton is the answer, but any step that reduces the environmental footprint of textiles has to be a step in the right direction.
We’ve chosen to source cotton from farms educated in sustainable practices - the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) trains farmers to use water efficiently, care for soil health and respect workers rights and wellbeing.
In conjunction, we are working with our weaving partners to launch new qualities using cotton blended with other materials that use less water to grow, such as hemp.
Coupled with our new vegetable wax, we can leverage the full potential of waxed fabric in contributing to a more sustainable clothing industry!
With care, waxed jackets can last a generation - the antithesis of fast fashion!’
